General description

Soft stemmed rush <1.2m high. Shiny dark-green to yellow-green stems taper from broad base; easily broken or squashed between fingers; pith spongy. Many-branched flowerhead, green to pale brown.

Damp pasture, wet habitats, disturbed or fertile ground. Most widespread of leafless rushes.

Seeds spread by wind & water.

Displaces native rushes.

Site management

Firstly distinguish from native Juncus spp. Repeat treatments 6 monthly until eliminated. Begin at top of catchment, exclude stock. Do not treat when grazed. Eablished in most available habitats, likely to re-establish from external seed sources. Control only if threat to rare native spp.

Recommended approaches

1. Dig up rhizomes, remove all material from area.
2. Weed wipe spring -summer, (300ml glyphosate + 2ml penetrant/1L).
2. Spray spring – summer (100ml glyphosate + 20ml penetrant/10L).
