General description

Short-lived, loosely tufted perennial grass <60 cm high. Soft, green leaves <20cm long have hairs on upper surface but no rib; underside is keeled, hairless & slightly glossy. Flowers present for most of the year.

Gardens, coastal cliffs, waste areas.

Seeds spread by wind, water.

Rapid coloniser, out-competes native species, including ground covers.

Site management

Minimise site disturbance, encourage native regeneration. 3-4 year programme can eliminate

Recommended approaches

1.Dig out small infestations.
2.Weed wipe large plants, spring -summer (500ml glyphosate/1L).
3. Spray dense stands, summer (100ml glyphosate + 20ml penetrant/10L (non-selective) or 60ml haloxyfop/10L (selective)).
