General description

Fast growing, woody, deciduous, perennial shrub <3m tall. Lance-shaped, pointed leaves green, hairless on upper surface, whitish & hairy underneath. Scented mauve-purple flowers (Dec-Feb) forming dense panicles <30cm long. Seeds in dry capsules.

Hedgerows, roadsides, forests, riverbanks, plantations, waste places. Prefers well drained soil, cooler conditions, shade tolerant. Tolerates a wide range of conditions.

Seeds spread by wind, water or on machinery.

Quickly forms dense growth, crowds out other plants.

Site management

Difficult to prevent reinvasion. Follow up necessary 6-monthly. Maintain rolling front.

Recommended approaches

1. Pull or dig out small plants.
2. Weed wipe Feb - Apr (300ml glyphosate /1L).
3. Spray Feb - Apr (100ml glyphosate/10L or 5g
metsulfuron/10L or 60ml Tordon BK/10L).
